Baton Rouge Center for World Affairs, Inc. dissolved in January, 2014
The Baton Rouge Center for World Affairs, Inc. (BRCWA), a 501(c)(3) non- profit corporation, was formed in 1997, with the support of then Mayor-President Tom Ed McHugh. Since the creation of the Mayor’s International Relations Commission in 1989 which was entirely led and staffed by community volunteers of varied international backgrounds, the City of Baton Rouge began to create innovative long range projects focusing on development of global connections.
Since 1997, BRCWA, the only organization of its kind in Baton Rouge, has continuously applied for and been included in the City’s budget as an outside agency. The funds from City government represented approx. two thirds of its annual budget.
A few weeks before the new budget year, without warning or explanation, the Metro Council voted to remove all of BRCWA’s funds for 2012. The entire amount was given to another organization headed by a former state senator who had not applied for it. Intense efforts by BRCWA and its many supporters to change that decision were in vain.
BRCWA ran out of funds very quickly. For two years (2012-2013), the organization’s President continued many of the established projects and connections on a volunteer basis. She housed the office at her home.
In January 2014, BRCWA had to be dissolved because of lack of even basic funds.
